Allergic Rhinitis

The first GLORIA module focuses on allergic rhinitis and its link to allergic conjunctivitis.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Describe the revised nomenclature for allergic rhinitis based on the ARIA document
• Discuss the stepwise treatment of allergic rhinitis based on symptom severity
• Recognize the relationship between allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis
• Differentiate between the major allergic eye diseases
• Describe the treatments available for allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic Conjunctivitis

This module concentrates more in-depth on stepwise diagnosis, treatment and pharmacotherapy of allergic conjunctivitis.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Describe the major allergic eye diseases and their epidemiology
• Discuss the differential diagnosis of allergic eye diseases
• Explain the mode of action of allergic conjunctivitis therapies
• Recommend a management plan for uncomplicated allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic Emergencies

The third module of GLORIA contains three sections, focusing on the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis, upper airway edema and status asthmaticus.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Understand the different mechanisms which cause anaphylaxis and the agents which are most likely to cause it
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis
• Understand the principles of the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis
• Discuss the causes of angioedema
• Review the spectrum and management of hereditary angioedema
• Describe Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor related angioedema
• List the risk factors for asthma exacerbations
• Identify the signs and symptoms of acute asthma
• Outline appropriate treatment strategies for acute asthma

Immunotherapy

This evidence-based module provides an in-depth review of allergen immunotherapy, and reviews injection and local administration routes of immunotherapy. 

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Discuss the standardization of allergen extracts
• List the efficacy, safety and long-term benefits of immunotherapy
• Explain the mode of action of immunotherapy
• Describe injection and non-injection methods of immunotherapy
• Select suitable patients for immunotherapy
   

Symtomatic approach to Asthma

The Symptoms and Treatment of Asthma module investigates the pathophysiology, assessment and treatment of each symptom and sign of asthma.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Describe the signs and symptoms of asthma and the underlying pathophysiology of each
• Explain the current concepts of asthma treatment

Food Allergies

This module gives an extensive review of food allergy, from pathology and mechanisms of IgE-mediated and T-cell-mediated food allergy to diagnosis and clinical management.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Recognize the main pathogenic food allergens in adults and children
• Differentiate between IgE-mediated, cell-mediated and mixed IgE- and cell-mediated food-related diseases in different organ systems
• Discuss the diagnosis of food allergy and the limitations of diagnostic techniques
• Describe the treatment of food allergy

Angioedema

The Angioedema module reviews the pathophysiology, diagnosis, genetics and management of acquired and genetic forms of angioedema.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Outline the major causes and differential diagnosis of angioedema and hereditary angioedema
• Explain the treatment options for the management of hereditary and acquired angioedemas

Anaphylaxis

The module has been developed to provide a global overview on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and management of Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic condition.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Discuss the different mechanisms which underlie anaphylaxis and the agents most likely to cause it
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis
• Describe the principles of the emergency treatment of anaphylaxis

Diagnosis of IgE Sensitization

This module reviews the specificity and sensitivity of the major diagnostic tests--skin testing and allergen-specific IgE antibody serology--that help to determine the pathological mechanisms underlying allergic symptoms.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Recommend the appropriate clinical tests for diagnosing allergic diseases
• Discuss the appropriate use of skin prick tests and serum tests in the diagnosis of IgE-mediated allergic diseases
• Describe the interpretation of clinical history and false positive and false negative diagnostic tests
• Discuss the use of allergy testing to measure response to allergen avoidance and immunotherapy
